TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines-The province of Cagayan, Batanes and the Babuyan Group of Islands were placed to storm warning signal No.1 as Typhoon Ferdie (Meranti) heads to Northern Luzon.

In its weather bulletin issued 11 am on Monday, September 12, the state weather bureau said Ferdie has intensified further.

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration or PAGASA said that the typhoon was last located in 870 km east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, moving west northwest at 22 kph.

Ferdie has maximum winds of up to 175 kph and gustiness of up to 210 kph. Forecasts said the typhoon could reach a maximum winds up to 215 km/ and a gustiness up to 250 kph before it crosses the Batanes islands.

Signal number 1 was also raised in Apayao.

PAGASA said moderate to heavy rain is expected within the 500-km diameter of the typhoon. It is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Thursday, September 15. TNF
