ISABELA, Philippines- At least 72 members of the New People’s Army (NPA) guerilla surrendered to military elements on Tuesday, September 6.

Clifford Soriano of the Philippine Army 5th Infantry Division’s Civil Military Operations Battalion said the rebels had “voluntarily” turned over their guns.

Soriano said under the government’s Comprehensive Local Integration Program (CLIP), the rebel returnees will receive financial assistance and livelihood programs.

“Their surrender was influenced by the increasing number of NPA fighters leaving the organization and living peaceful lives with the help of the government,” Soriano said in a statement.

Soriano added said they expect more rebel surrenderers in the coming months as a result of the ongoing peace talks between the government peace panel and the rebels.

“We assured NPA rebels that they will be assisted to live normal lives once they return back to the folds of law,” he said. TNF
